The origin of this work is very simple. The title of the of the exhibition is the Shanghai Duolun Exhibition of Young Artists-it is ‘youthful’, but with the unavoidable traces of rough imitation. I choose the form of the chimerical and the illusive, as simplistic as possible. It is also one of the trends in Chinese contemporary art. The image captures the emotional moment when Beijing mayor Wang Qishan waved the Olympic flag at the closing ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games; this scene has a profound significance, and attunes to the passionate patriotic sentiments of today. While fully displaying the hypothesized ‘spatial degree of freedom’, this piece aims to differ from previous works. It is at once a ‘Youth Art Exhibition’, a ‘substitute’, and an ‘idea’, with the flow of the above concepts all the more prominent.
